How to Print Coloring Pages at Home (Ink-Saving Tips)
By InkPages Editorial · May 26, 2026
Printing coloring pages at home should be quick and cheap. The good news: because coloring sheets are black-and-white line art, they are some of the most printer-friendly pages you can make. Here is how to get clean prints without burning through ink.
1. Download the PDF, not a screenshot
Every page on InkPages offers a Download PDF button. The PDF is sized to fit standard A4 and US Letter paper with comfortable margins, so it prints edge-to-edge cleanly. Printing the PDF (rather than screenshotting the image) gives you the sharpest lines and the most predictable result.
2. Use “Fit to page” and black-and-white
In your printer dialog:
- Set Scale to “Fit” or “Fit to printable area” so nothing gets clipped.
- Choose Black and white (or “Grayscale”). Coloring pages have no color to print, so this saves your color cartridges entirely.
- Pick Draft or “Economy” quality. Line art looks great at draft quality, and it uses far less ink.
3. Choose the right paper
For everyday coloring, plain 80-90 gsm printer paper is perfect. If your kids love markers, step up to slightly heavier paper (100-120 gsm) so the ink does not bleed through. For framing a finished masterpiece, cardstock feels special.
4. Print a test page first
If you are printing a big batch for a classroom or party, print one page first to check the scale and darkness. Adjust and then print the rest. This avoids wasting a stack of paper on a setting that was slightly off.
5. Save ink with lighter lines
Most of our pages use bold, clean outlines, which actually use very little ink because they are mostly white space. If you want to use even less, draft mode plus grayscale is the winning combination.
No printer? No problem
You can still color digitally. Open the PNG on a tablet and color with a drawing app, or take the PDF to a local print shop or library - many will print pages for a few cents each.
